From the Snow Canyon High School Drama Departments stage performance of the  two-act comedy written by American actor/playwright Larry Shue.


Set in Terre Haute, Indiana in late 1979, The Nerd presents the story of Willum Cubbert, an unassuming young architect, friends Tansy and Axel and unexpected houseguest Rick, who had saved Willum's life in Vietnam. Over the years, Willum and Rick had exchanged occasional letters and greeting cards, though they never met. Willum has promised Rick that he could come to him for help at any time. While Willum is hosting a dinner party for his boss, Rick shows up. His awkward manner and inappropriate behavior throw the occasion into shambles. Rick decides to move in. Eventually at his wit's end, Willum decides to take a chance on Axel's plan to get rid of Rick.

In this play there is the role of 11 year old boy Thor Waldgrave, one of the naughiest brats to ever grace the stage. Due to casting opportunities this role is often cast with a girl, and so often Thor becomes "Thora". And: Larry Shue's script requires a spanking for Thor/Thora. Here the original excerpt:

THOR. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! (He throws himself

into the closet, slamming the door. )


RICK. (Lowering his voice, excitedly.) Oh, okay. (Crouching and
looking quickly around.) Where are we supposed to hide? Does it
matter? (No answer. Of course.) Okay. (He hides behind one of the
large u. chairs. Several seconds pass. In the same loud whisper.) When's
he supposed to get here? (Long pause.) Anybody know? (Pause.)
Okay. ( Willum and Waldgrave enter, studying a watercolor.)


WALDGRAVE. So what are we talking? We're talking about
four, five things, tops. That archway there, all that junk around
the windows. Get rid of that, we're in business. What's your
problem?


WILLUM. (With difficulty.) Yeah-I know, I just can't help
feeling if we lose all that molding, see, it won't be-I mean, I'm
afraid it's gonna start looking like a lot of other buildings,
and - . ( Thor explodes out of the closet, clutching Waldgrave around the
waist and hiding his face in Waldgrave's stomach.)


WALDGRAVE. Son-! What is it? What's wrong? (Thorjust
shakes his head.) You're tickling me, son. Come on. Tell Daddy
what's bothering you. ( Thor whispers squeakily in his ear, pointing at
the door.) A what? ( Thor whispers again. Waldgrave sits him down on
the sofa. His tone is patient, fatherly.) Now, son, you know. You
know I put up with a lot, but - (Turning Thor over his knee and
spanking the daylights out of him.) 1- will- not - put - up - witha
-liar! ( Thor wails and runs back into the bedroom, slamming the door
again. Clelia has entered during the spanking. )
